The Rules Of Writing

The rules of writing are that there are no rules. Based off of the various videos and articles we have been given to read, to me, it is clear that there are no rules to writing. Now to some people obviously this opinion may differ, but to me the basic idea of writing is freedom of speech. Which means there are no rules to writing because freedom of speech is based off the idea that all thoughts are your own and you have the right to express them to whomever you please. That becomes your speech, thus creating the freedom of your speech, in no matter what you write. Of course somethings written may seem absurd to some people and those people may take offence to the certain literature. This shows that certain pieces of writing are not universal. That they are directed to more of a specific audience. Much like pictures, plays or any type of media that is created for public display. Not always is the piece going to be accepted and appreciated by all. Maybe even some pieces will be appreciated by none. There is no one in the world that is qualified to say whether any piece of writing is bad enough that it is to be destroyed or not. Who is anyone to say that writing bout Vampires that suck the blood out of people enough to kill them that is so much worse than a story that involves a murder with a weapon. No matter what the context of the story is there are much worse and gruesome stories out there that could potentially be more harmful to the minds of people. Having said that, again I'd like to say that there is no real way to say which stories are okay and which stories or not. If this was the rule freedom of speech would not be a known phrase that plenty of people live by. I understand that lots of people have the opinion that it is fine to write about whatever we want but there are some rules, lets say things like proper grammar and punctuation. Well I would go as far to say that this is incorrect as well. The reason I believe this is incorrect is because not only is writing poems and stories literature. Things like music are written literature too. If this were to be true we wouldn't have things like rap. Rap is not grammatically correct all the time. Things are spun into slang and sentences are often not proper either. This simply proves that not all writing follows the rules, and it can still be accepted. Finally after examining the different opinions of people on the topic of whether writing has rules, and arguing the point of that there are no rules, I have come to realize that this will always be a debatable topic, and no one will ever be right. There could be and there could not be rules on writing. The mystery continues, and it always will..

  1. You need to tighten up your thoughts Kait. You are repeating points and rambling a bit, which makes the posting longer than the optimum length. Call me over and I will help you weed it down. The ending is a bit of a cop out:)

    - which therefore is a conjunction, continues same thought
    - capital I - multiple times
    - that they are directed to...is a sentence fragment
    - are no rules, comma and continue
